 Policies and Procedures

Library Hours:

We are officially open from 8:00 am through 3:45 pm.  The librarian often stays later than 3:45 pm, and if she is in, please feel free to enter to check out a book.  If you have permission from a teacher, you may stop in during homeroom, snack time or study hall as well.

 Check-Out Policy:

How many books are you permitted to check-out?

Kindergarten and Pre-First - one book at a time

First and Second Grade - two books at a time

Third Grade - three books at a time

Fourth Grade - four books at a time

Fifth Grade - five books at a time

Teachers are allowed to check out an unlimited number of items, as needed.

How long may you check out a book?

Since the school operates on a ten-day cycle and each grade visits the library twice a cycle, the checkout time is ten school days.  If you are not finished with a book at that time, you may renew it once for a period of ten more days.  After that, you must return the book so that others may have access to it.  Overdue notices are distributed as reminders once the due date has passed.  A student may not check out a new book if she has one overdue.

What if your library book gets damaged or lost?

First of all, please do not hesitate to talk to the librarian about the issue!  She understands that well-loved library books can become injured or misplaced.  If a problem is caught early, a book may be able to be repaired.  If the damage is too great or the book simply cannot be found, the student's account will be billed for replacement of the book.

Selection Policy:

The primary objective of the RPCS libraries is to support and enrich the curriculum of Roland Park Country School.  To accomplish this objective, it is the responsibility of the libraries:

  • To provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum, taking into account the various abilities, interests and maturity levels of the students.

  • To provide information which is diverse in content and representing the various religious, ethnic, and cultural groups and their contributions to the heritage of the United States.

  • To provide materials that will encourage development of factual knowledge, appreciation of literature, aesthetic values, and moral and ethical standards.

  • To provide information which will enable students to make intelligent judgments in their everyday lives and which increase a student's understanding of her own emotional or personal growth.

  • To provide materials which preset opposing sides of controversial issues in order that students may learn to recognize different points of view

Plagiarism Policy:

Plagiarism is the act of passing off another person's words, expressions, or ideas as one's own or without proper acknowledgment.  When used broadly, the term "plagiarism" extends far beyond written assignments and can be applied to all work of all kinds in every discipline.  It is expected that students, as well as all members of our academic community, will engage in academic pursuits with honor and integrity.  For more information, see the RPCS Red Book.

Intellectual Freedom and Protection of Rights for the Library User:

We consider our library a forum for information and ideas, and its users are entitled to intellectual freedom and free access of materials set forth by the American Library Association (ALA) in the Library Bill of Rights.  Our materials, services and facilities are provided for the enlightenment of our school community, and they are equally accessible to all users.
