 Fitness Testing

The RPCS Physical Education program uses the Prudential Fitnessgram, which is designed to evaluate and educate students about the status of their physical fitness.  There are two primary objectives for administering these assessments:  provide information on individual fitness level and provide information for program's curricular evaluation.

The Prudential Fitnessgram assessment measures three components of physical fitness which have been identified as being crucial to overall health and optimal function.  The three components are: (1) aerobic capacity, (2) muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility, and  (3) body composition.  Our program focuses on the first two components and does not test body composition of our students.

Test Items

Aerobic capacity:  One Mile Walk/Run - to walk and /or run a one mile distance at the fastest pace possible.

   Muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility:

Abdominal strength - Curl-up Test - to complete as many curl-ups as possible up to a maximum of 75 at a specified pace.
Upper Body Strength - Push-up test - to complete as many push-ups as possible at a rhythmic pace (90 degree angle of elbows)
Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility - Trunk Lift - to lift the upper body 9-12 inches off the floor using the back muscles and hold this position to allow for the measurement.
Flexibility - Back-saver Sit-and-reach - to be able to reach the specified distance on the right and left sides of the body...legs are tested separately.
