 AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS

CHESS FOR BEGINNERS

An After-School Club for RPCS Lower School girls (grades 1-5) of all skill levels—especially beginners!  Playing chess is interesting, challenging, and fun.  It teaches pattern recognition and develops problem-solving skills.  Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends in different classes and grades.  Beginners will be coached by John Rockefeller (father of 2nd-grader Sophie and 4th-grader Laura).  Intermediate players will be coached by Arkadiy Frenkel.  Advanced players will be coached by Chris Kim (father of 5th-grader Charlotte and 7th-grader Madeline). An International Chess Master and full-time private chess coach, Mr. Frenkel has a USCF rating of 2374.  A USCF Local Tournament Director, Dr. Kim has a USCF rating of 1242.  A USCF Club Tournament Director, Dr. Rockefeller has a USCF rating of 1339.  30 minutes of instruction and 30 minutes of casual chess games.

CREATIVE DRAMA CLUB

A specially designed eight week after school activity, just for you!  Creative Drama uses theater games, dramatic play, story enactment, imagination journeys and music to let young children present. You will benefit from dramatic experience and there is no pressure to perform. The emphasis is on the process rather than the product. Creative drama can let you learn about emotions, problem solving and relating to others. Children can develop their imaginations and confidence and pretend to be anything they want to be. Girls will have a snack before the program begins and will be dismissed from the Harris Center, for convenient pick up. Program is presented by Anita Horwath, a professional actress and teacher at the Together Working in Graining Skills (TWGS) after school program at Baltimore School for the Arts. She is also the Artistic Director for an intergenerational improvisational acting ensemble that performs in Baltimore City.
