From the Upper School Head - Joan Smith

First quarter ended on October 24th and grades and comments were due on Tuesday, October 28th, so you should be receiving individual comments from each of your daughter’s teachers soon after.  Grades are calculated by semester; therefore this grade is only an indication of where your daughter is at this point.  The final semester grade is not an average of the two quarters.  Rather it is the cumulative grade plus the exam.

For most high school students, time management is an issue as they learn to balance the many commitments and demands in their busy lives.  If your daughter has not already developed the habit of doing her homework on the night it is assigned rather than the night before it is due, please encourage her to do so.  This enables her to see her teacher for help if necessary and still give her the time to complete the assignment successfully and on time.  Likewise, encourage her to look ahead and make plans that take into consideration a family event or trip, a special event, or anything that will cause her to adjust her schedule to accommodate the time that might impact on homework time.  Time management skills learned in high school makes for a college freshman who is prepared to handle almost any schedule.

The topic for Parent-Connect this month is “Learning, ADHD, and Study Skills.  As always, remember that you can watch this informative hour-long program by logging on to the school website and going to the Current Parents link anytime you have some spare time.  I encourage you to take advantage of this free parenting information resource.

I hope that you will plan to attend a performance of our Upper School musical, “The Boyfriend."  Each year I am in awe of the quality of the production that the girls produce.

Junior and Senior Parent: Please be sure to read a newsletter from the College Counseling office.

My best wishes for a Thanksgiving filled with the joy of family and friends together.
