From the Lower School Head - Barrie Sigler

Dear Parents,

As the First Quarter of the school year comes to a close, I am delighted to note how settled-in the girls are. They seem quite comfortable in their new grades with their new teachers and new schedules. Many of them are volunteering to perform skits and poems in Lower School Meeting, and the older ones are planning and designing community service projects. Brimming with enthusiasm and energy, the girls are full of ideas and suggestions for every project and event.

Dance Party:  November14th is the date of our annual Dance Party. This parent-daughter event promises to be a fun one for 1st and 2nd Graders. Mrs. Sylvia Botts, our LS dance teacher will teach some 50's steps to parents and students. Come dressed casually for an evening of fun in our brand-new gym!

Conference Day, November 21:  The end of the First Quarter of the school year is Friday, November 7. The teachers will then prepare reports which will be sent home with the girls by Wednesday, November 19.  Parent Conferences will be held on Friday, November 21, and School will be closed for LS students. Your homeroom teacher will contact you about setting up an appointment. After you have heard from her or him, call Mrs. Laziuck in the LS Office to schedule it with your child’s teacher (410-323-5500, ext. 3022).

The Boyfriend: Our Upper School musical this year is The Boyfriend. The dates are Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22 at 7:30 and Sunday, November 23 at 2:00.

The RPCS Blood Drive will take place in the Lower School Multi-Purpose Room on Monday, November 24, 2008. Please sign up with Ms Yvonne Hughes at hughesy@rpcs.org or by calling the main number, 323-5500.

Parents, this is a convenient way to give blood, much easier than making an appointment at a donor center. Come on the 24th and help save lives!

Holiday Fair: One of the most enjoyable events of the school year is the Holiday Fair! It will be held this year on December 6 from 11:00 to 4:00 in and around the the school.  It’s a real family event with many activities for Lower Schoolers, greens and wreathes for decorating, games, lots of vendors selling holiday gifts and crafts, and a special RPCS booth.  It is an RPCS tradition that is a lot of fun for the whole family!

Dress for the cold: With the on-coming cold season, please make sure that your daughter dresses appropriately for outside play and inside comfort. We recommend that every girl have a uniform sweatshirt and/or sweater at school to put on when she gets chilly. Please put her name in all articles of clothing.

A Word about Bear Hugs: Debbie Saiontz, a parent in Grades 2 and 4, chairs our Bear Hugs Committee, the Lower School’s community service planning group.  Bear Hugs is intended to help provide the Lower School girls with exposure to community service and give them a lasting sense of how rewarding helping others can be.  Each class has parent volunteers who will assist the girls with their class projects.  Our hope is that successful fundraising and project completion will come primarily from the efforts of the girls themselves, rather than the parents or teachers. Look for more information to come about these enjoyable and meaningful community service projects!

Thanksgivng, I believe, is becoming my favorite holiday. It’s a peaceful day with family and friends gathered around the table. It is without the material trappings which accompany just about every other holiday. I hope that you will enjoy this Thanksgiving with your daughter and the rest of your family. Please take time to reflect and delight in the wonderful gifts that are around us every day.
