From the Lower School Head - Barrie Sigler

Dear Families,

It’s hard to believe that Spring and Spring Vacation are just around the corner. The year certainly is flying by! During this month, like every other one, the Lower School is a busy place.  Please note the events and dates in this newsletter and put them on your calendars.

Healy Lecture:    Please come enjoy this year’s speaker for the annual Healy Lecture, Joy Hakim, on March 4th,.  She is a dynamic, multi-talented historian who has written several textbooks for children. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders will hear her in the afternoon, and you have this opportunity to hear her in the evening. Please visit her website at www.joyhakim.com

Edible Art Exhibit:    This is such fun!  The Edible Art Exhibit will be held in the evening of March 10. There are two times to drop off your child’s entries: Sunday, March 9 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm in the MPR (Use the MPR door off the playground; Mrs. Kopf will be there to receive the artwork.), and Monday, 7:30 am to 10:00 am in the MPR. Entries received after 10:00 am on Monday may be too late to be judged.

The doors of the Dining Hall will open to all at 6:30 pm to see the exhibit, hear the results of the judging, and taste the artwork. For details, please see the flyer that was sent home or see Ms Kopf’s website at rpcs.org.

3rd Grade Coffee:  On March 6 there is a Coffee for parents of Third Graders to learn more about the Bloom Project. This endeavor is a two day workshop designed to help our girls as they “bloom” into confident, resilient adolescents. The program is an interactive, hands-on approach to real-life issues of self and conflict. It was designed by Jill Jahries, an elementary school counselor with Baltimore County. Jill will be leading the discussion at the Coffee and the student workshops. Come and hear more about this exciting program for our girls. The Bloom Project is generously underwritten by the RPCS Parents' Association.

Upcoming event: Grandparents’ Day:  This year, Grandparents’ Day will be held on Friday, May 2. It will be for the grandparents and “grandfriends” of students in Kindergarten, Pre-First, Second, and Fourth Grades. Although the details of the day have not been finalized, I am mentioning it now so that you have this date on your calendar.  Please pass the date along to grandparents who may be able to attend. It would be good to check “SchoolBASE” on the RPCS website to be sure that we have the names of your child’s grandparents and “grandfriends” so that they will get invitations. Fill in the information if it is missing or call Sandy Laziuck in the Lower School office with the names and addresses. Please let the grandparents know that parking will be available on campus for them. We are asking faculty and staff to park off campus that day to free up parking for our guests.

Some of the highlights of this event will be the Spring Concert, the traditional Maypole Dance, and the Lower School Art Show. If your daughter is in the First, Third, or Fifth Grades, please plan to attend these events on Thursday, May 1st, the traditional date for May Day.

I hope you and your family will have a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Vacation, with lots of “down time” to enjoy together.

With best wishes always,

~ B.G.S.
