From the Upper School Head - Joan Smith

The Winter Formal was such a success last year that we are having it again this year on December 13th.  We are in need of parent volunteers who would help.  Obviously we would be happy with any parents who would want to stay for the duration (8-11) but it probably makes more sense to divide the time into two shifts – 7:45-9:30 pm and 9:30-11:15 pm.  Please email or call me if you would be willing to help out in this way.  You might even get together with a few parents and have dinner before or go out for a late dinner and make it a fun night!

If you have never attended the Christmas Program, or you are new to RPCS, I urge you to come enjoy this beautiful program of Christmas music and living tableaus.  These tableaus are a treasured tradition at RPCS that involve students placed as the figures in front of backdrops of famous works of art depicting the Annunciation, Nativity, and Adoration.  The tableaus are themselves works of art created by our own Judy Waters and re-enacted by students from the Middle School.   The Glee Club, Semiquavers, Somettos and Gospel Singers provide the music and students from Footlights Theater Ensemble give appropriate readings prior to each living tableau.

The Semiquavers have many “gigs” throughout the greater Baltimore area every year, but this year they are especially excited to sing at the lighting of the Washington Monument on December 4th at Mt. Vernon Square. This will be televised on WBAL TV.  Also, tune in to WBAL at about 8:25 a.m. and again at 8:40 a.m. on Thursday morning, December 18 to hear the Semiquavers sing!

Winter will be upon us soon so please note that in the case of inclement weather, RPCS coordinates with Gilman and Bryn Mawr regarding decisions to close school or open late.  Weather related decisions will be called in to WBAL (1090 AM) by 6:15 a.m. and will be posted on the first page of the RPCS website at http://www.rpcs.org.  The decision to close school early will be made in conjunction with Bryn Mawr and Gilman and will be announced on WBAL-AM as soon as a decision is made.  As soon as the decision is made, it will also be on the school’s website as well as on the recording at school prior to the opening of the switchboard.  Please remember that the decision to open on time or late is not always the right decision for everyone depending upon where you live and the weather and road conditions there.  Make the best decision for your child, and of course, if you choose to keep her home, call Mrs. Harrington to inform her.

My best wishes to you all for a lovely holiday season.  Enjoy your time with your children – they grow up in a flash!
