SCHOOLS ATTUNED@RPCS
Parent Workshops - 2010-2011

In recent years, over eighty RPCS teachers and administrators have attended a one week Schools Attuned workshop generously supported by the RPCS Parents’ Association.   Schools Attuned is offered by All Kinds of Minds, a not-for-profit organization that translates the latest research from neuroscience and other disciplines on how students learn — and vary in their learning — into a powerful framework that educators can use in the classroom.

Last year, RPCS offered parents a series of workshops that All Kinds of Minds designed for parents: Learning About Learning.  These workshops were designed to develop a partnership between parents, educators, and students to support success in school and at home. Plans are underway to repeat these workshops in 2011-2012.

For this year, 2010-2011, five workshops are scheduled to allow parents to further explore the All Kinds of Minds framework.  The first workshop will provide an introduction to the Neurodevelopmental Framework. The subsequent workshops will focus on a particular neurodevelopmental construct. Optional readings will be made available in advance. In addition to learning about the neurodevelopmental framework, RPCS faculty will be invited to share ways in which the construct is taught or integrated into the classroom.

Each Workshop will be held in the Trustee Seminar Room from 8:30 – 10:00 am; coffee, tea and snacks will be available starting at 8:00 am.

September 29 – Overview of Neurodevelopmental Framework
November 16 – Focus on Attention
January 25 – Focus on Memory
March 25 – Focus on Social Cognition
May 18 – Focus to be determined with input for workshop attendees

To register for the workshops, please email Carla Spawn-van Berkum, Assistant Head of School for Academics, at vanberkumc@rpcs.org with the name(s) of the parent(s) who will attend and date of the workshop(s) in which you are interested.  You will receive a confirmation email prior to the workshop date.

What is being recycled? Batteries containing heavy metals such as cadmium, lithium and mercury need to be recycled and can be taken to recycling centers in Baltimore County or to stores that sell them such as Staples, Home Depot, and Office Depot. Baltimore Country and Baltimore City also have Hazardous Waste Collection days where these batteries can be taken to a central location.
